Young Carers
Sarah Mansell and Jodie Evans- Young Carer Leaders
Welcome to our Young Carers Page
At High Ongar Primary School we celebrate that some of our pupils are young carers. A young carer is someone under 18 who is caring; unpaid, for a family member who is unwell, has special education needs, is disabled or has mental health needs. They often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Research suggests there are at least 800,000 young carers in the UK, but many do not realise they are a young carer.
We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At High Ongar Primary School we are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified, supported and celebrated effectively.
As part of our young carers support, Sarah Mansell holds drop-in sessions with HOPS young carers regularly, within school time. We also hope to hold Young Carers events, involving families from HOPS and other schools, in the near future. Visit this page for further details.
As High Ongar Primary School’s Young Carers’ Leaders, we have responsibility for ensuring all young carers can enjoy school and make good progress. If you think your child might be a young carer or could be affected by any of the areas we’ve highlighted above, please contact the school for more information at: [email protected].
Any information that is given to us will be treated sensitively and no information will be shared without your knowledge.
